Abstract

Analytical computation of reliability for complex engineering item is not tractable. The discretization was the main approach for approximating system reliability for intractable cases. But it
fails to satisfy the later demand in terms of design parameters. Objective of this work is to offer a different approach where one not only gets a clear idea about the extent of error but also can manipulate in terms of design parameters. Here study of bound based reliability approximation of solid-shaft under
theWeibull frame work is considered. Numerical study, for a selective choice of theWeibull shape parameter, ensures sharpness in the reliability bounds and establishes thereby the usefulness of this bound-based reliability approximation. Since design parameters can be adjusted as per requirements in this method, it can be of practical use during early stages of product design.
